Yesterday was one of those days that — despite my best laid plans and a well-orchestrated schedule — did not go as planned. Chad and I had tickets for an awards banquet last night to honor some outstanding young professionals in our community at a local college. We were designing all of the centerpieces at the shop, so I planned to drop the goods at the event location around 3:00pm, then head home for a shower and some proper primping (instead of my usual state of getting dressed for black tie affairs in a hurried frenzy) to be at the event just in time for the start of cocktail hour at 6:00pm.

While out running errands in the morning, Chad called to tell me that one of my employees went home sick. Which threw my whole plan straight to the birds, but we decided I’d still try to be home by 4:30 to get ready. One thing led to another, the afternoon flew by, and before  I knew it I was standing in my back room cleaning a new shipment of flowers at 5:00pm, still in my work clothes and hair all a mess. I called Chad in a pouty funk, griping about my lack of time and necessary tools for such a makeover undertaking, and mid-conversation, dropped my iPhone in the flower cutter filled with flower food and water. {@#$!}

Fortunately, my old stand-by for such fashion emergencies, Macy’s, is just a few blocks from the shop. So I hopped in the car [in the middle of an afternoon downpour] and bought a head-to-toe outfit in 20 minutes for less than $60. We’re talking shoes and all, people. Fabulous buttery, camel-colored, leather Nine West shoes. {A small consolation to ease my stress and frustration.} I rushed back to the shop and quickly got dressed in the bathroom — a feat I’ve perfected over the last year — and we made it to the event by 6:20. {Husband looked so handsome in his sports coat and slacks!}

This top was among the things I scooped up in a fury. While my first instinct in such shopping sprees is to go for a cocktail dress, I know I’ll get more mileage from separates. I paired this bold yellow Alfani flower top with a grey and white graphic print pencil skirt (on clearance for $7!) and the neutral Nine West heels.

There are a couple of things I keep on hand at the shop for such dire situations. A can of dry shampoo, oil blotting sheets, a blow dryer, and a tube of red lipstick. When you don’t have time to completely re-do your face, a swipe of red can make all the difference in quickly pulling yourself together to look like you made an effort. After last night, I decided I needed to add the following tools to my style-first-aid-kit: a pair of neutral heels, a cute evening clutch, curling iron, my favorite HD finishing powder, and creme black liner.

Now, if the boutique were up and running, I could’ve just swiped a cocktail dress off the rack and headed out on my merry way! Bring me your clothes, people… Clearly I need them.

Fall is easily my favorite time of year. Cooler temps, pumpkin lattes, scarves and boots, and all the great holidays and parties that only require you to eat, drink and be merry. Good stuff.

I feel like this season changeover can’t come quick enough. I’m starting to get in a style funk, and I’m running out of ideas for remixing my favorite pieces without having a heatstroke {layering has not been an option in the sunshine state for the past few months}. Your fall must-have suggestions were quite helpful yesterday! I’m making a list of the basics I’ll need to get me through the new season, and I’ll share them with you soon.

Would someone please tell me where August went? Seriously. I feel like I fell asleep on June 27th and woke up August 29th. I really can’t fathom where the time is going…

Are you guys tired of seeing this Olsenboye foldover tote yet? I know, I know, I’ve been wearing it in almost every outfit post lately. But in my defense, it matches everything, my Macbook fits inside it, and it’s really comfy to carry. They’re on sale for $29.99 right now (almost half off!). And, it comes in floral. Perfect for some fall pattern mixing.

Speaking of the upcoming autumn… Who’s been building their fall wardrobes lately? Tell me your scores. I’ve been abstaining from my retail urges, so I’d like to shop vicariously through all of you. Tell me what I need this season. I figure if you help me with a list of must-haves and give me compelling reasons why they’re necessities, I’ll have a better chance of convincing Husband that I should go on a spree.

And…. Go!

what i’ve been doing this week instead of blogging.

Puppy sitting. My friend Lisa is out of town for the weekend, and we’ve had her adorable baby Molly since Wednesday. She’s all kinds of awesome. It’s hard to sit down with the ol’ Macbook when she wants to play and cuddle in your lap. Plus I’m busy giving Doak extra loves so he knows he’s still his momma’s favorite. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Setting up a new business. You know, no big deal. Our pretty new displays are arriving and new consigner appointments are on the books, but there’s still so much to do!

Getting back in the swing of things at the flower shop. Summer is a slow season in the flower business. When the new school year starts, things really start to pick up — quickly. This means a lot of re-stocking, revving up the staff, and brushing up on my design skills. All while working on the aforementioned new business.

Discovering some amazing new [to me] blogs. Like The Wiegands (beautiful and inspirational with a focus on family, faith, and love), Words of Williams (Kelsey’s other blog that’s chock-full of great perspective on marriage and finances), and cotton&curls (one of the best DIY/refashioning blogs I’ve come across yet).

Trying to control my shopping urges. Between back-to-school sales, tax-free weekends, and more direct mail special offers and gorgeous fall look books than I can handle, I’m a little overwhelmed by all of the things I think I “need” for the new season.

Reconnecting in the real-world. As in, lots of girls nights, homemade dinners with Husband, and morning and evening walks with Doak while listening to new audiobooks on my iPod.
